About the Project

The Work

Out of Place looks at young creatives — people who notice things, sit with observations, and respond to the world around them through what they make, wear, and are. People who want to aggressively make change. People who are deeply, unapologetically passionate.

It is about creative and queer people, and how that way of existing can feel so out of place in a world driven by money — where art, style, and self-expression were long dismissed or disrespected. Bernie is drawn to people he sees as completely free. People who feel joy — visibly, loudly, without apology.

It is a sustainable project built with no funding. Almost everything used across the shoots was second-hand.

The Teams

The project was shot across multiple shoots, each with its own team. Everyone below contributed to making Out of Place happen.

Bernie Poyton

Bernie Poyton is a photographer based in the UK. He shoots and directs his own projects, working across portraiture and documentary. Out of Place is his end-of-year project and a deeply personal one — built from many angles, with many people, over a long stretch of time. He is drawn to people he sees as totally free, people who feel genuine joy, and people with a fierce, passionate drive to make change.
